Lookup a Word in the Dictionary using Snaptu

Snaptu

Both Merriam-Webster and Collins have excellent free web-based online dictionaries but using the web-browser on the E71x to look up a word is not very convenient. They also have S60 apps that are probably very good…but they are not free.

Snaptu comes with a free online dictionary!

In the main screen simply select the Dictionary.

Enter a word to search or select a recent definition.

The result appears right away.

I am not sure if the quality of the definitions is on par with Merriam-Webster or Collins but it is hard to beat free.

What is your opinion on the matter? Is paying for a dictionary app worth it?

If you’re a fan of Dilbert (and who isn’t?) you will enjoy Dilbert Mobile.

The speed at which the daily strip is loaded is impressive and it is presented in a very ingenious manner: you simply use the right/left key to move to the next/previous frame within a strip without the need to zoom to read the text.

The orange icon shows the selected frame.

It is also possible to browse through the entire Dilbert archive using the calendar view accessible using the soft keys.

Sadly keyword search is nowhere to be found at this time.

Read Ars Technica using Snaptu

As explained previously Snaptu is a free all-in-one application platform written in Java that gives a definitively iPhone-inspired look to your E71x

Once the Snaptu platform is installed you can browse for a list of Snaptu applications or web links and select the ones you want to see in the main screen.

One of the available applications is an Ars Technica reader. Ars Technica is a great technology news and information website but reading it on the small screen of the E71x using a web browser is somewhat cumbersome. The Snaptu app makes it much more efficient.

Once Ars Technica is open you can select an article.

Note that you can scroll through the list of articles very quickly.

The font size is perfect and the pictures from the original articles are displayed along the text.

If you like Ars Technica, you will love this app... and if you are not familiar with Ars Technica yet you should check it out. It's certainly one of the best sources of information on computer technology.

Edit 18-OCT-2010: It seems that the version of Snaptu available in the Ovi Store works very well over Wi-Fi but not so well over 3G. You should launch it first over Wi-Fi and then select Upgrade from the menu to upgrade to the latest version 1.03(1)...

FRANCE 24 LIVE

You cannot watch Netflix movies on your E71x but you can watch the news thanks to FRANCE24 LIVE. France 24 is the French equivalent of CNN International and BBC World News and is available not only in French but also in English and Arabic.

The content is world-class and the picture quality is impressive. You may want to try the app just to see how nice video streaming can be on the E71x.

Launching the app will take you to the main menu.

There you can pick your language and move to the next menu.

In this menu you have the choice between the live content and prerecorded programs.

All videos start after a brief buffering delay.

Sadly the otherwise excellent Screenshot app from Antony Pranata does not support taking screenshot while the video is running so you will have to check the quality by yourself...

Qt Phone Demos on the E71x

Qt Phone Demos

You may have read elsewhere that Nokia is betting its future on Qt. Qt is widely used cross-platform application development framework which is preinstalled on new Nokia phones.

The important question for E71x owners is to know if Qt will be supported on their phone of choice.

If you want to check by yourself try downloading the qt-demos installation package from the above link. You should be able to install it (and uninstall it) without any problem.

Sadly most demos do not work very well but they were probably not made with the latest version of Qt. The latest version (4.7) might work better...

Check the Weather with Snaptu

Snaptu is a free all-in-one application platform written in Java that gives a definitively iPhone-inspired look to your E71x

Once the Snaptu platform is installed you can select Snaptu applications or web links that you want to see on the main screen.

An application of particular interest in my opinion is the Weather Forecast. Being able to check the weather is important but I don't feel that paying for a weather app is worth it. Snaptu Weather Forecast is both free and very well designed.

As in most weather app you first get a high level overview and can then drill down to a more detailed level.

In conclusion if you are looking for a free and easy way to check the weather on your E71x Snaptu Weather Forecast is a very good option.

Note that other good options include WorldMate and World Traveler that Ben evaluated previously.

Manage Your Contacts and Calendar Online using Ovi Sync/Contacts/Calendar

If you read this blog chances are that you are already very familiar with Ovi Suite as well as the Ovi Store. However you might not have tried the Ovi online services.

The purpose of this post is to introduce you to Ovi Contacts and Ovi Calendar which are free online apps that you can access from any computer to manage the contacts and calendar on your E71x.

This is done by synchronizing your phone with a database in the cloud over the Internet.

The first step is to visit www.ovi.com and create a free Nokia account if you don’t have one yet. A single Nokia account can be used to log on most Nokia services and is a must have for any serious Nokia user.

Log in Ovi Contacts and Ovi Calendar and follow the detailed explanations to register your phone.

You will then receive a SMS to automate the configuration of Ovi Sync.

Simply save the SMS to configure Ovi Sync and go in the Settings menu of the E71x.

You can then open Sync...

And verify that Ovi.com is now an option.

Simply select Synchronize to synchronize your phone with Ovi.com.

You now have a neat way to backup the contacts and the calendar of your E71x without having to deal with the bugs of Ovi Suite ;-)

Please note that this may transfer a lot of data so make sure you use a Wi-Fi connection or have a data plan.

Manage Your Netflix Queue using Netflix for Nokia E71x

If you use Netflix you probably have encountered the situation when a friend or coworker suggested a good movie to rent at a time when you did not have a pen and paper with you to write the title down…

However you might have carried your phone in your pocket. Netflix for Nokia E71x let you find the movie and add it to your queue with just a few clicks.

From the home page you can look for a movie or directly go to your queue(s).

Here we search using the keyword Finland (where Nokia is based).

Note that sadly Netflix for E71x does not let you stream your instant queue to your phone at this time. Still, any Netflix subscriber should have this app installed on his/her phone. After all it is an “exclusive” app for the E71x ;-)

Google Sync for E71x

For those of you who are still reading this blog, I was trying to help my wife sync her phone (a Palm Pixi) with her email client, Thunderbird the other day. Well, it appears that the only way to do it is to set up a Google account and use Google as an intermediary. I learned that there is something called Google Sync (can you tell I am not much of a Google user) where you can sync your Google contacts and calendar with your phone. Well, I decided to find out if it will work with our beloved E71x, and as it turned out, other people had got it to work successfully. So, if you want to sync with Google and don't know about it, here is the Google Sync. The Google web site has very good instructions and you should not have any problems.

Update: Please check out this link on how to get it to work. Apparently, you need to install a new Mail for Exchange client to get the sync to work. The new client can be downloaded at http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/software/MailForExchange(2.9.158)_S60_3_2.sisx. Then, follow these instructions on this page. Good luck!

Great Free Game to Kill Time - Top Hits Solitaires

Do you find you have nothing to do while waiting in the doctor office? Or standing in line at the airport? Need to kill some time? Well, you could always fire up your E71x and play a game of solitaires. I discovered the free Can't Stop Top Hits Solitaires game on one of the threads on the AT&T Nokia forum (thanks DanG82). You can download the game here. The app comes with 15 different solitaire games (Alaska, Calculation, Canfield, Forty Thieves, FreeCell, Golf, Klondike, Penguin, Pyramid, Scorpion, Simple Simon, Spider, Towers, Trefoil, and Yukon). It also tracks your win/loss for each variation and provides a demo mode (sweet). The only issue with the app is that the "Game rules" menu item brings up a blank screen, so you will have to google for instructions on the ones you don't know how to play. I also found that the in-game navigation is very good - allowing you to either use the cursor pad to move the cards around or using the number keys for the advanced players.

Another Way to Run Unsigned App on Your Phone

Ovi Store Now Works For Me!

A few days ago, a reader posted a comment asking for help downloading and installing the browser, Skyfire. When I tried to see what the problem was by going to the Skyfire web site, I realized they no longer offer a direct download from their site but instead redirect you to the Nokia Ovi Store web site. The Nokia web site than wants you to register/sign-in and tell them your phone model. After all that, you then have to click on the 'Send to mobile' button which then you get a text message on your E71x. Follow me so far? After receiving the text message, you then have to click on the provided link in the text message which... wait for it... wait for it...

asks you to install the Ovi Store app on your phone. In my case, it asks me to upgrade to the new version. Now, I was never able to get the previous Ovi Store app to work before. But, I gave it another go. And what do you know? The new version actually works this time. I had to search for Skyfire again within the Ovi Store app (why?), but after finding it, it downloaded and installed on my phone without any problems! I was a little shocked.

So what's the point of this long winded post? Ovi Store now works on the E71x (at least on mine) and I still have no idea (and can't offer any help) as to why the reader couldn't download and install Skyfire.

Lastly, you should download and install the Ovi Store app if you haven't done so. There are quite a few apps, games, videos, and personalization (think theme, wallpapers etc) in the store. A few of them are even free but haven't had a chance to download them. Maybe after a while, I no longer have to keep The List if the Ovi Store serves this purpose. Ha ha. To give you an idea what the Ovi Store app looks like, below are a few screenshots. Have fun!

New Version of Google Maps with Search by Voice

Other Nokia blogs have already mentioned this, but just in case you have missed it, Google released a new version of Google Maps that you can search by voice. For example, after launching Google Maps, you can press your phone's "call" button and simply yell, holler, or say "Empire State Building, New York" instead of typing them! I wonder what would show up in Google Maps if I say "Bat Cave". Ha ha.

Alternative Internet Radio App for E71x

For those interested, there is another Internet Radio app for the E71x. It is from a company called Mundu and the app is called Mundu Radio (http://mundu.com/products/mundu-radio/features). It appears to be free but you have to register on their web site to download a copy. Also, make sure you download the Symbian 9.x version to work with the E71x.

I quickly tested it out and it appears to be minimal in functionality. Upon bringing the app up, you are presented with a login screen. Use the same login and password that you registered with the web site.

After logging in, the radio stations are separated by genres (Acoustic, Alrnative, Ambient, etc). There are a total of 30 genres as of last count. Selecting a genre will bring up a list of radio stations. Selecting a radio station will obviously start streaming the broadcast from that station. That's pretty much it as far as I can tell!

The only other options I can find are displaying a list of recent stations that I played, change the current station, update playlist, and alerts. One of the missing features that I think is important is having the ability to add your own stations. I wasn't able to figure out how to do this if this feature is there.

In conclusion, I am not crazy (nor can I recommend) this app, but it is another app you can muck around with if you like.

Skype for Mobile is Official!

First, just want to say that it definitely has been a while since Stephen or I posted the last blog entry. For myself, I have been busy with work, school, and family (not necessarily in that order). On top of that, there just doesn't seem to be much news or new apps for our beloved E71x.

As for today's entry, the Skype app for mobile phones has finally came out of beta. The official release is now available from Skype. As most of you know, Skype is an app that allows you to use your Internet/Wi-Fi connection to make free or very cheap phone calls. With Skype for mobile, you can get a Skype To Go number which will allow you to make very inexpensive international phone calls right from your mobile phone.

I don't use Skype much, so I won't be able to comment on all the functionality and advantages it offers. I do know, however, a few people that uses Skype religiously when they are traveling for business to save money.

Should I Blame AT&T?

I heard from another blog, Nokia Experts, that Nokia just came out with a new version of Ovi Maps that gives you all essential car and pedestrian navigation features, such as turn-by-turn voice guidance for 74 countries in 46 languages, and traffic information for over 10 countries, as well as detailed maps for over 180 countries for FREE. Yes, FREE! I got all excited looking at the screenshots and immediately went to download and try to install it on my E71x (using the E72 version) - hoping that it will work even though it isn't listed as one of the supported devices. Well, it didn't. The installation first said “Application not compatible with device, continue anyway”. Of course, I chose yes but then got the dreaded “Unable to install. No Access” message. * Bummer *.

I don't know if this is AT&T agreement with Nokia to prevent the E71x owners from using the app - so that we have to subscribe to AT&T Navigator. By the way, you can still download the previous 3.0 version but it is not free. Supposedly, the new free version is 3.03.

Oh well...

gReader, the GoogleReader for your E71x

Hi everyone! It has been a while since my last post. With school, work, family, and the holidays, the last few weeks have been extremely busy for me. Around that same time, a reader brought to my attention an app called gReader. He told me it is a Google Reader app for our beloved phone. Not particularly a huge fan of Google, I have no idea what a Google Reader was - until now. It is basically a service that allows you to "subscribe" to the web contents you are interested in as "feeds". These contents are then aggregated to your reader for you to read, without having you to go to each separate web site to read them. Furthermore, when there are new contents available, the Google Reader will inform you of the new "unread" items.

I am actually using a very similar service on my Firefox browser via a plug-in called Brief. I subscribe to about 20 feeds (web sites) and read them on a daily basis without having to go to each separate web site to check if there are new contents. It is definitely a time saver!

gReader is available from couple places. You can get it via the Ovi store or directly from the developer. Note that this is not a free app but it looks like the price is quite minimal at $1.99. You can download a demo version to try it out before purchasing.

After installing the app, the following home screen will appear while loading:

Upon initial start up, you will need to go into the Settings screen to enter your user name and password if you want to synchronize with your Google Reader service. Once this is finished, it will then retrieve all your subscribed feeds:

There are several screens and you can quickly scroll from one to the other by using the control pad. The available screens are All Items, Starred Items, Shared Items, Read Items, Unread Items, and an additional screen for each feed you are subscribing to. Below is a screenshot of the Read Items screen with this blog's entries.

I gave the app a test drive for about 10 minutes and it seems to work well. The only negative is it appears that this is only a text reader. It will not display any images that are on the original web site or blog (such as all the screenshots we posted on this site).

I hope everyone had a great holiday break. With the New Year fast approaching, I figure this would be a timely blog entry...

A couple weeks back, another reader (spiralsofgrace) left a comment on this blog about an app called SportsTracker. At first, I thought it was a news service that reports on sport scores such as football, baseball, and soccer. But when I clicked on the link he sent, I found out that it is actually a Nokia app that will track your workouts. It uses the GPS on your phone to record speed, distance, and time and automatically stored the results in your training diary. In fact, you can even share this data online with other users.

I am not a workout kind of guy (no time with kids, school, and work), but for those of you who are thinking about making New Year resolutions to getting more fit, you should definitely check out this app! It is in beta but it is free to download and use.

If you decide to try out this program, I would love to hear your feedback and how well (or not so well) it is working for you!

The Lazy Way to Sign (Unsigned) E71x Apps

Back in October, Stephen gave us great step-by-step instructions on how to sign an "unsigned" app (see the blog entry and comments here if interested). There were also two possible methods (easy and more complicated) and for some apps like iSMS, you have to use the latter. Since I am lazy and not as enterprising as Stephen, I never attempted to do this. However, when I heard of an easier way to sign an app with a small payment, I decided to try it out and see how well it works.

One of these "easier" ways is to use an app called HelloOX2. Yes, you use another app to sign another app. Go figure, hey? The app is actually a hacking tool for your E71x. In the words on its web site, "Hacking mean that it can get full access to your phone's system folders and files, with this capability, HelloOX2 could install a root certificate to your phone, and with the root cer & key pair you could sign any apps to install, include the Manufacturer capabilities requested apps. Completely fix annoying certificate error!"

The funny thing is the app is offered for free but unsigned. But if you give the author a small donation, they will sign it for you. Once again, I am lazy and opted for the donation route. Basically, you provide your phone model, IMEI #, email address, and a small donation, and within 24 hours or so, they will email you a link to download a signed app specifically for your phone. I never got an email, but after a few days, I went back to the site and entered my info, and I was able to download the app directly.

The installation went without a hitch. Once again, the app basically hacks your phone when installed. So if you are not comfortable with it "hacking your phone", you may not want to go this route. Note that after it is installed, you can "unhack" the phone at any time (see screenshot below).

After installing the program, I thought I can start installing unsigned app without problems. Well, that wasn't the case. I tried everything and finally gave up and sent an email to HelloOX2. Within a minute or so (I am not kidding), I got a reply back. I guess I have to enable the "Installserver_FP2" patch on the ROMPatcher Plus program (which is a separate program that gets installed along with HelloOX2). I wish they will explain that on their web site!

I tried installing the unsigned iSMS app after enabling the patch, and voila, it installed without a hitch. I was also able to install an unsigned version of Shazam which I wasn't able to download from the Ovi store. However, the Shazam app still does not work (it gives me a 'Unable to execute file for security reason' after tagging) but that's a different issue.

When I get some time, I am going to create a post summarizing all three ways to sign an app and provide a convenient link to it on the main page. For now, if you are interested in the "lazy" way, give the HelloOX2 app a try!

Shazam Update Available (or maybe not?)

You know, I was all set to post an update announcing that the folks over at Shazam had finally worked out the kinks some of you were experiencing with the Symbian version of the app and that an upgrade was available.

In fact I was going to mention it a few weeks ago when I first downloaded the upgrade (which I got by following the link sent to my phone), but then Ben posted that he was still having issues with the OVI store. So...I went back and rechecked the links, and as it turns out things still seem a bit screwed up:

Clicking on the "i" (Info icon), brings up a couple of options:

which seemed odd and I almost quit, but for some reason I tried to scroll down, and it brought up the lyrics...

(I'm not sure why a fairly sophisticated app like Shazam wouldn't include a scroll bar on the right, but then again I've never written an app so what do I know?)

Anyway, I wont go through the rest of the options, but I will say that everything I clicked on seemed to work as intended, and at this point I'm not sure what to say?

But if you do manage to get a working link you should get a free 30-day trial period followed by the choice of free limited usage (5-tags per month), or the "Premium" version for a one time charge of $5.00 (US).

One final word of warning: if you do decide to look for a working link, pay attention to the terms of service! I had tagged a song and then I clicked on the "buy" icon. Half-way down the music store page I found a "Get Shazam" link. And when I click on that I got this page:

It launched what I think is the AT&T music store. Take a good look at the terms, it's a subscription for $2.99 per month!

Just to reiterate what I said above - I was charged a one time fee of $5.00 for the premium plan.

Nimbuzz Now Supports Twitter

The title says it all. The latest version of Nimbuzz, an IM and chat client for E71x, now provides a pretty full-featured Twitter client (via a separate tab). Although the GUI is not as fancy (or should I say as colorful) as Gravity, you can now just run one program to handle all your messaging needs. Sweet!

I Want Facebook Client for My E71x!

Have you been secretly jealous that the iPhone has a Facebook client and the E71x doesn't? Yes, there was a widget type client that launches the default browser to the Facebook mobile page, but obviously it isn't the same. It is kind of like taking your sister to the prom.

So when two weeks ago, I got the news that Facebook officially announced a native app for the Nokia E71 and E72 phones, I got all excited but only to find out moments later that I cannot download it for the E71x from the Ovi Store. All I got was the message, "your device is not supported", which translates to "Sorry, AT&T asks us to screw you and doesn't want you to run this app". Unfazed, I dug around the web looking for an alternative download link. Eventually, I found one, installed the app and ran it with no problems. "Take that, AT&T!"

Tired of the Standard Font?

I can’t really say that I’ve had reason to complain about the standard font on the E71x, but I don’t really think I've thought about it much either. Then yesterday I ran across an article at the Symbian-Guru site where they mentioned an app that made it easy to install and then modify almost any true type font you liked. And on top of that, they listed it as one of their top-five picks for free applications. My interest was piqued, so I went through the step-by-step process and in the end I think it’s deserves some further attention.

Now since I’m not sure I could improve on the excellent write-up done by the folks at Symbian-Guru.com, I suggest you head over there and follow the directions.

Just for the record I did get an error message when loading one of the files. It basically said the app was not compatible with this model phone. But there is an option to continue loading, so all you have to do is hit OK, and it installs and runs fine.

As for free fonts, the Symbian-Guru site provides a link to one source but there are loads of different sites with thousands of different options available.

Dial 1-800-FLOWERS...Finally!

It’s no secret that AT&T (in their infinite wisdom) removed a decent amount of “usefulness” from the original E71 when they brought out the E71x. And to my mind one of the more egregious offences was the elimination of the ability to dial numbers by selecting letters. This is obviously a concern as there are numerous forum postings similar to “How do I dial 1-800-FLOWERS on my E71x”. Sadly, most responses offer little in the way of useful solutions.

And that problem, while unfortunate, isn’t even the biggest issue - because in everyday use if you can remember the mnemonic device then you can certainly remember the name of the place you’re looking for. Then, awkward as it may be, you can probably find it on the Internet with a quick search.

Which is why when I first read about this loss of functionality I thought, ah, no big deal…and then I tried to leave an after-hours voice mail for a co-worker whose extension I couldn’t remember.

I dialed my way to the dial-by-name directory, where I heard this:

“Please enter the name of the individual you wish to reach, starting with the last name, followed by the first. For Q press 7, for Z press 9…”

It took no more than a few seconds for me to realize I was stumped. Sure, I could have had a file in Quickoffice or Notes that listed the conversions, but that would have required some forethought on my part, and besides, doesn’t that seem a bit stupid for a “smart” phone? Instead, I hung up, dialed back into the automated system, and found an option to ring a bell for a night-shift supervisor. After a few long minutes of constant ringing I finally got a hold of a (mildly annoyed) person who could give me the extension, but couldn’t transfer me…which of course required me to dial in for a third time. Needless to say, it suddenly seemed like a lot more than a minor inconvenience.

Finally we have a solution: DialMyWord. Developed by William Asher, it is a small java app that is simple to use and almost free (actually it is free to use as a converter, and for the small fee of $0.99 you can register it and it will dial the converted number).

Enter the word in the highlighted box and the converted number appears below as you type, Just like that!

This is a must-have app and I offer bended-knee thanks to Mr. Asher for fixing something that AT&T broke.
