As Stephen pointed out, there are two versions - signed and unsigned (both are free). He quoted Symbian Underground which states that "the signed versions are bundled with adtronic, an intrusive piece of adware that pollutes your phone with advertisements when you get called or receive an SMS. That's right: adtronic puts ads on your screen even when Theme Scheduler and Profile Scheduler are not running! So better get the unsigned versions of Theme Scheduler and Profile Scheduler."
At first, I was kind of reluctant to go through the hassle of trying to sign an application myself, but Stephen again came to the rescue. He posted step-by-step instructions on how to do this. I will provide his instructions here again:
- First, download the application from here (again, make sure you download the unsigned version) and remember the exact folder that it was downloaded to. Also be aware that sometimes files are downloaded zipped or compressed and you have to open the zip folder (the application file you are looking for will have an extension .sis or .sisx).
- Next, proceed to the Symbian Signed website. In the first field, enter your phone's IMEI number. If you have no idea what this is, you can find it via several methods. The easier is to install the application Jbak Taskman and within this application, select Menu -> Tools -> System Info.
- Enter your email address in the second field. Please enter a valid email address as this is where the link to download the signed application is sent to.
- In the third field, you need to provide the path to the Profile Scheduler file you just downloaded in Step 1. Simply press the browse button next to the field and navigate to the file (.sis or .sisx) in the pop-up window. Select the file, press "Enter" or "Open" in the pop-up window and the path should appear in the third field.
- Enter the squiggly characters in the fourth field to prove you’re not a bot. Don't forget to check the checkbox to accept the legal agreement (you may want to read it first) and finally press the 'Send' button.
- If you did everything right, you will receive a confirmation email in your inbox within a matter of minutes. Click on the confirmation link in the email.
- After another minute or so (at least for me), you will receive a second email that contains the link to download the signed application. Click on the link to download the signed copy.
- Install the signed copy as you normally have done with the other applications and you should be good to go!
In any case, a BIG THANK YOU to Stephen for recommending this app and providing all the instructions on how to get it to work on the E71x. Thanks, Stephen!
"One caveat: I found out that not all unsigned applications are this easy to sign. In fact, I attempted to figure out how to sign the iSMS application all morning and I haven't had any luck yet."
ReplyDeleteWe must live in a parallel universe, I was working on this all morning as well. I'll keep you posted.
Some guy on AT&T wireless forum was having problem installing ThreadSMS (but I have no problems) yet he was able to sign and install iSMS (which I haven't figure out). Been trading messages with him/her on the forum thread here: http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=nokia&thread.id=57531
ReplyDeleteOK, I got Free ISMS ver1.02 signed and installed. This process was a lot longer and a bit more involved, but it’s not so cumbersome that it shouldn’t be tried if you really want the app.
ReplyDeleteWhat you need to do to get the app signed is a certificate and a key. You can Google the terms for more information, but truthfully, you don’t even need to know what these are if you follow the steps below.
(BTW, please bear with me if the following logic or terminology is incorrect, the e71x is my first “smart’ phone and I’ve only been at this a few months.)
Step 1: Go to the OPDA site and register for an account. http://cer.opda.cn/en/index.php?module=index&action=register
It’s a pretty simple page as there are only five boxes to fill in. The only thing that made me think for half a second was the “Account” box. But eventually I realized that this is just where you enter the username you will use in the future to sign in. So pick a username, fill in the boxes, click on the register button, and you should be logged in.
Step 2: Go to the “Apply” page (This is where you apply for the cert and key).
http://cer.opda.cn/en/index.php?module=certificate&action=apply
Again, there are five boxes and the only tricky part is the phone number. It wouldn’t accept mine, or at least I couldn’t figure out the format, so I Googled a bit and found this:
http://hi.opda.cn/index.php?s=80757579398a9ff598395fb35e059d5b&showtopic=264&pid=827&st=0&#entry827
Which suggested this number: 15890765435 and, sure enough, it worked.
So fill in the remaining boxes and click on Apply button.
Step 3: Wait. Yes, you actually may have to wait a full day, but eventually you will see the cert and key appear on the My Certificates page (there is a link at the top of the web page):
http://cer.opda.cn/en/index.php?module=certificate&action=my
This page has a row of horizontal boxes.
Prior to approval the second to last box on the right will say “applying” (or something close to that) and the last box will be empty.
After approval the second to last box will say “normal” and the last box will have three links: Signing Software, .cert, .key
Step 4: Down load the Fee ISMS app. Normally you could just go directly to the junnikokuki site, but it appears to be down at the moment. So what I did was search for a web for a link to the file in the .sis format. I’m not sure what the latest version is but I found version 1.02 here: http://www.mobiles24.com/downloads/s/278800-184-free-isms_102
You will have to register for an account with them, and they will send you a link to your email for confirmation, but it was a quick download once I went through the process.
Step 5: Go back to OPDA site to the My Certificates page and click on the on the “Signing Software” link. A pop-up window will open (or maybe a new page? Sorry, but the process went so quickly I can’t quite remember) and ask you to provide a path to the software you want signed. Click browse, find the Free ISMS file on your computer, then click open and it will upload the file to be signed. After maybe 20 seconds a link appeared and I was able to click on it and download the signed version of the app.
It installed easily and seems to be working great.
One final thought – from what I’ve read it’s a good idea to save the cert file and the key file on your computer, in case you need or want to use it with different signing software.
To do that you simply go to the My Certificates page and click on the .cert and .key link in the box on the right and then click on save.
Good luck!
"...but eventually you will see the cert and key appear on the My Certificates page (there is a link at the top of the web page)"
ReplyDeleteShould read:
"...but eventually you will see the cert and key appear on the My Certificates page ( to get to the My Certificates page click on the link at the top)"
Sorry if that wasn't clear from the original post.
The easiest way to install unsigned apps is to install HelloOX2 its a phone hack that will allow you to install unsigned apps. I used the cert from OPDA signed HelloOX2 and installed then ran it on my phone. Once you install it you will have to leave your memory card in your phone... so if you like to swap your micro sd card you will have to run HelloOX2 on each card or manually copy all the required files. This hack does not work on phones with newer firmware so check before you update. It has been working great on my e71x.
ReplyDeleteAs for profile scheduler.. I had problems running it before it would never switch my profiles for me... Maybe I will try it again.. I also install theme scheduler but that didn't work either..
BTW HelloOX2 can be found at www.helloox2.com
you can also have them sign the app for you if you donate.
I followed all the steps above but when i try to sign the app, it give me the error message "please choose the cer.£i"
ReplyDeleteI am using IE8 but also tried in google chrome and am using the exact .sis file linked above. I have selected the only bubble i can under "my certificates" and have tried many different combinations with no luck. anyone have any ideas?
thanks in advance
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThanks first of all for creating this blog. It is so very helpful and informative. Well, I tried to install this Profile Scheduler application but haven't been successful yet. I did get it symbian signed and during installation I get a warning and if I continue it says unable to install. I don't know what I am doing different. Can someone post a signed file that worked so I can try installing it? Thanks very much.
@Mech.Anand L, how did you get it Symbian signed - by following the directions above or downloading the signed version?
ReplyDeleteBen, I followed all the steps as stated above. I did download the unsigned version only and had that symbian signed. Still not able to figure what I am doing different. May be I'll go thro' the process again and see what happens. I'll post the result here.
ReplyDeleteok..tried the same process one more time.. got the same result.. couldn't install.. here's the 'Security Warning' I get.. Application is for development use only. Installation may cause a serious damage to your device.. If I still continue, it says unable to install.. Is this something to do with my E71x's software version or something? Pls help. Thanks
ReplyDelete@Mech.Anand L, another thing you can try is to use HelloOX2. It is the easiest and quickest way to install unsigned apps (that's what I do now). Not free, but the author will accept any amount of donation (as far as I know).
ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget to set the Online Certificate Check to "off" on your phone...
ReplyDeleteMenu>Settings>App. Manager>Options>Settings
oh wow.. that did the trick Stephen.. It probably is one of the first things I should know, but I am not that much of a cell phone saavy guy. Anyways, thanks again stephen and Ben..appreciate your help guys.
