The List

I started this blog to share all the applications I found for the Nokia E71x phone in one place. Since new blog entries have been added, you can quickly find the list by clicking here. I will keep it updated.

If you know of an application that you like a lot and it is not on the list, let me know and I will add it to the list. Note: Please make sure it works on the E71x before submitting. E71 does not count as there are known applications that run on E71 but not the E71x.

Must Have:
  • Jbak Taskman - (Free) - This is a MUST have on your E71x.  It is more than a simple task manager, as it allows you to quickly see what applications are running and having shortcuts to your apps all on the SAME screen.  You can also have this app autostart any other apps when the phone is turned on.  This feature alone is worth its price in gold (except that it is free).  The menus and options can be somewhat overwhelming at first, but after you figure it out, you will never go back.
  • Nokia PC Suite - (Free) - AT&T is not going to tell you about this, but if you need to sync contacts, install applications, transfer files etc (which is about everyone), you simply need this app.  I don't know why this software did not come with the phone.  Crazy...
  • Nokia Ovi Suite - (Free) - This new suite is to replace Nokia PC Suite.  Check this out first before trying Nokia PC Suite.
  • Nokia Ovi Store - (Free) - This is the official Nokia app store.  There are plenty of free (and non-free) apps and media for you to check out and download.
Email:
  • Nokia Messaging - (Free) - According to others, this is a great alternative to the preinstalled AT&T client.  However, I cannot seem to get one of my email accounts to work.  Your mileage may vary.
  • ProfiMail - ($) - Although this is not free, it is the most robust email application if you are using IMAP or POP mail.  I got it for about US $25 and it is totally worth it if email is critical to you.
  • RoadSync 4 - ($) - If your emails come from an Exchange server (most corporate emails are), then this is the alternative to the built in AT&T Mail for Exchange.
  • Seven - (Free) -  I tried this app a while back but never got it to work.  Apparently, some of the readers here confirmed that it is working on the E71x.
Browser:
  • Skyfire - (Free) - The built-in WAP browser is great (and I use it quite often), but if you want to surf the web as the designers intended, then run (don't walk) to this site and get this great browser.
  • Opera Mini - (Free) - I just downloaded and installed this baby.  If I am correct, this one displays the WAP version of the site if available, otherwise it shows the full HTML page.  Note that currently, there are two versions of this browser - version 4.2 and 5 beta.
  • Opera Mobile 10 Beta  - (Free) - Unlike the Opera Mini, this browser is specifically aimed towards smartphones and touchscreen devices.  It is a full HTML web browser which means it will always display the full HTML page of a web site.
  • Bolt - (Free) - Claimed to be one of the fastest (if not the fastest) browser for mobile phones.  For a quick review of this browser, check out this blog entry by Stephen.
  • UC Browser - (Free) - According to Stephen, navigation is slightly different from other browsers, with a little less polished interface.
Instant Messaging:
  • Nimbuzz - (Free) - This is the IM & chat client I used on my phone.  It supports AOL, Yahoo!, Skype, Windows Live, Facebook, Google Talk, Twitter, and the list goes on. I tried a few others and this one seems to work the best for me.  Again, you may like others better.
  • Fring - (Free) - This is very similar to Nimbuzz.  Other people really like this one.  I used it for a while but decided to switch to Nimbuzz.
  • Palringo - (Free) - Never tried this IM & chat client.  Some seems to like this one also.
  • eBuddy - (Free) - Never tried this one either, but others recommend this one on another blog.
  • Talkonaut - (Free) - So many IM & chats clients, so little time :-(.
SMS Messaging:
  • ThreadSMS  - ($) - A SMS specific chat client recommended by a reader. One of the cool features is its support for lots of smileys and emoticons.
  • SMS Chat - ($) - This looks like a SMS specific chat client that organizes all your SMS messages in a chat-like format.  This looks like a useful app if you do a lot of SMS messaging and wants to keep the thread with each person separate and organized.
  • iSMS - (Free / Unsigned) - This is a free app similar to ThreadSMS displaying all your SMS messages in a chat-like format grouped by senders.  However, this does not seem like a well supported app.  The author's web site is currently down (note that the download link provided is not the official link).  Worst of all, you have to sign this app yourself before you can use it which can be difficult and time consuming.
Communications:
  • Skype - (Free) - I don't know how to categorize Skype but as most people know, it allows you make free or very cheap phone calls via your phone's Wi-Fi connection.  With a Skype to Go number, you can even start making very inexpensive international calls from your mobile phone!
    Twitter/Facebook:
    • Gravity - ($) - Once again, this one is not free but this is the best "looking" twitter app for E71x.  I guess you get what you pay for!
    • Tweets60 - (Free) - I haven't tried it since the "looks" of Gravity has pretty much convinced me not to keep looking.
    • Twibble - (Free) - This is in beta and each version will expire on a certain date.  I haven't tried this application so use at your own risk.
    • AT&T Social Net - (Free) - Apparently, AT&T recently released a free application called SocialNet, which was built by iSkoot. It provides access to Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace, in a carousel view.  Try it if you dare.
    • Facebook Client - (Free) - Nokia does not allow you to download the official Facebook client for the E71x (probably thanks to AT&T), so we decided to provide it for you.  Of course, as the saying goes, there are no guarantees and use at your own risk.
    Google:
    • Google Mobile Apps - (Free) - Instead of listing all the available Google apps, you can simply go here and download to your heart's content.  The ones that you definitely want are Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Search.
    • gReader - ($) - A client that aggregates web contents you have subscribed to using the Google Reader.
    • Google Sync - (Free) - This allows you to sync your Google contacts and calendar with your E71x.
    Music/Video:
    • Nokia Internet Radio - (Free) - Yes, this comes from a site in Europe (after all, Nokia is a European company).  In any case, this is a GREAT app.  You can now listen to all the Internet radio stations from your phone.
    • Mobbler - (Free) - Last.fm radio player and scrobbler.  You need to sign-up for an account at Last.fm.  I just tried this app a few minutes ago and it took a while to get it to work.  Slightly flakey is my first impression, but hey, it is open source.
    • CorePlayer - ($) - According to William, one of the readers, this is the best media player for the E71x. It supports a wide range of audio, video, and image formats.
    • Qik  - (Free) - Suggested by reader William, he said "if you like taking a lot of videos and don't want the hassle of uploading it yourself, Qik is your answer. It is free and once you have it installed, all you have to do is point and press stream which is the left soft button and then stop and it will upload it to your Qik account automatically".
    • Shazam  - (Free) - This is a cool music ID app and service that is temporary available for free.  Basically, it will attempt to sample the song/music that is currently playing and identify the title and artist etc.
    • Mundu Radio - (Free) - Alternative Internet radio player.  Minimal functionality and nothing to shout home about.
    Photo:
    • Nokia Photo Browser - (Free) - Here is a cool alternative to the built-in image viewer on the E71x.  It is developed by none other than Nokia itself.  Not as feature rich as the Resco Photo Viewer (see below), but it is free!  It also has a very cool 3D scrolling effects as you browse through your images.  A MUST try!
    • Resco Photo Viewer - ($) - I installed the trial version and have played with it for a little bit.  It looks like a very good photo and image viewer.  Unfortunately, it is quite expensive for what it does (IMHO).
    Geo/Location:
    • Phone Locator - (Free) - According to Stephen, the phone basically uses your phone's GPS to track its location at user-defined intervals. Then you can log into a web site and it will display the location of your phone on a map.  Great for locating a stolen or lost phone!
    • Garmin Mobile XT - ($) - Provides full-featured navigation to your E71x. Comes installed on a data card and provides pre-loaded maps, spoken turn-by-turn directions, real-time services, and many other pretty neat features.  However, the price is pretty steep.  For a detailed review, check out this blog entry by Ankur Patel.
    Games:
    • vBag - ($) - For Game Boy Advanced fans (yeah, remember that?), this is a Game Boy Advanced emulator running on your phone.  Yes, that means you can play Game Boy Advanced games on your E71x.  I tried the trial version and was able to get as far as loading a couple of games.  However, I wasn't able to actually play them because it wants a registration number (and I wasn't about to pay $30).
    • Global Race Raging Thunder - (Free) - Cool racing game for your E71x.  It has great graphics, background music, and the frame rate is quite acceptable.  It has single player as well as multi-player mode.  The game modes available are arcade, championship, and time attack.
    • Top Hits Solitaires - (Free) - Great way to kill time with this free solitaire game.  With a collection of 15 solitaires you'll surely get incomparable pleasure from this unhurried game and enjoy specially selected the most popular solitaires. Master many famous and well-known games such as Freecell, Klondike, Spider, Pyramid, Joker, Carpet, Golf, Canfield, Yukon, and discover the newest and unknown.
    Travel:
    • WorldMate - (Free/$) - The free version provides weather forecasts for over 1,000 cities, world clocks, and currency coverter.  The paid version provides flight status for more than 175 airlines and real-time alerts for flight delays and cancellations.
    • Psiloc World Traveler - (Free/$) - Similar to WorldMate, this is a free app to download and install and provide four free services (weather, world clock, currencies, and world map).  The paid services are flights updates and travel safe to store personal and sensitive data.
    Business:

    • Bloomberg- (Free) - As for Bloomberg does best, it provides the latest business news, stock quotes, equity indices, commodity, currency and bond prices.
    Blogging:
    • WordMobi - (Free) - This apps allows you to update your WordPress blog right from your phone. The only draw back is you need to install python to get it to work.
    Shopping:
    • ZebraScan - (Free) - This was brought to my attention by a user on the AT&T forum.  You use the phone's camera to take a picture of a product's barcode at the store and the app will search the Internet for product names matching the scanned code and provides links to Google, Amazon, Ebay.  I haven't tried it myself but will give it a test drive next time I go shopping!
    Online Services:
    • Netflix - (Free) - Update your Netflix queue.wherever your are and whenever you want with this app.  And no, you cannot stream movies from Netflix to your beloved E71x.
    • Snaptu - (Free) - This app is hard to explain.  It is basically an app that allows you to access a bunch of other online services (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, Flickr, AccuWeather) and more.
      Office Related:
      • QuickOffice - ($) - In case anyone is interested, there is a "Premier" version available on this site.  I haven't had a need to try it so I have no idea what the difference is between this version and the one that came with the phone.  The site also offers other apps such as calendar, clocks, and dictionary.
      • Calc Sheet Lite - (Free) - An alternative to QuickOffice's spreadsheet program.  According to the web site, it has a wide range of mathematical functions and unlimited number of worksheets.
      Fitness:
      • SportTracker - (Free) - Thanks to reader, spiralsofgrace, for pointing this app out.  It is a free beta app from Nokia that will help you track your workouts.  It uses the GPS on your phone to record speed, distance, and time and automatically stored the results in your training diary.  Currently, there are no E71x version.  Instead, try out the N78 version.  The E71 version seems to have issues on the E71x.
      Tools:
      • Screenshot - (Free) - I discovered this app from this blog (How to Take a Screenshot).  It is written by a guy named Antony Pranata from Canada.  If you find it useful, consider making a small donation on his site
      • Profile Scheduler  - (Free / Unsigned) - Stephen recommeded this application and it comes very handy if you are one of those people (I am one of them) who keep switching phone profiles before going to bed and after getting up in the morning.  Note that you want to download the unsigned version of this app.  For details and instructions, go to this blog entry!
      • Switch Off - (Free / Unsigned) - Stephen found this Russian app that can automatically switch off your phone at a preset time or after an inactivity period.  He also figured out how to make the phone turn on by itself at a specific time!  Check out his blog entry for more info.  BTW, since the official site is Russian, you may want to try this alternative download location.
      • X-plore - ($) - Probably the best file browser for this phone.  You can download this app and use it to remove the AT&T bloatware on this phone.  You can find instructions over at Nokia Experts.
      • Y-Browser  - (Free / Unsigned) - Another file browser app.  There is a signed and unsigned version.  However, I highly recommned the unsigned version as the signed version contains adtronic, an intrusive piece of adware that pollutes your phone with advertisements when you get called or receive an SMS.
      • cClock - (Free) - Great little screensaver app that display the date and time prominently when the phone goes into screensaver mode.  You no longer have to squint at the tiny date and time the phone provides.  It even comes with a handy little stopwatch function!
      • Cute Keys - ($) - This is another app that allows you to assign shortcuts to open applications, documents, create SMS messages, or call someone.  However, after paying for this app, I found Jbak TaskMan which I think actually does a much better job.  If you don't like Jbak TaskMan, give this one a try.
      • Putty - (Free) - This one is for system admins and geeks only.  If you don't know what this is, you don't need it :-).
      • JoikuSpot - (Free/$) - Recommended by Kenneth, this app allows you to creates a WiFi access point on your phone so you can easily connect your devices to the Internet. The free light version doesn't allow you to set a password on the access point, so you may want to monitor the connection once its active.
      • Best Answering Machine - ($) - As the name implies, it answers your incoming calls and let the callers leave a message which you can listen to later.  What's the difference between this and voicemail?  Well, you don't have to call voicemails to get your messages with this app.  You can also set different greetings for different contacts or group of contacts.
      • SmartLight - ($) - Stephen found this app.  This is a simple app that keeps the backlight on for all screens other than the idle screen. Although it may not be obvious why this is useful, it is great for a number of reasons.  See the quick writeup here for an explanation.
      • NTorch Lite - ($) - Need a flashlight in an emergency but don't have one.  With this app, you can turn your E71x into one!  It is even smart enough to reduced the power of the light beam so that it can stay on for a much longer period of time.   With this app, you can send out SOS signals or just annoy other people by flashing them when you are really bored.
      • DialMyWord - (Free) - This application lets you dial words on your Java-enabled QWERTY phone. If you know the mnemonic phone number, like 1-800-FLOWERS, you can type that word and the program will convert it to the appropriate number.
      • FontRouter - (Free / Unsigned) - An open source app to give user more controls over font mechanism on Symbian, such as loading 3rd-party font file, font substitution, size adjustment.  You can use this app in conjuction with FontRouterMan to install and change your fonts on your E71x.  See this article by Stephen for more details.
      • FontRouterMan - (Free) - Provides an interface to FontRouter.
      • HelloOX2 - (Free / Unsigned or $) - an one step hacking tool for all Symbian S60 3rd & 5th phone, allowing you to install any unsigned apps without any work.

Great list. Great stuff here. One thing I noticed is that when I looked at my running processes, I had 113 running and most had the red puzzle next to it. Is this something you have experienced?

I thought to add ThreadSms. You pay for this app but it works great for threaded text messaging.

Yes it is a lot. I was hoping is wasnt some kind of spyware or something.Thats good news though.

SMSchat is also a good sms threading app. Ive also heard of the nokia conversation app (threaded sms app) working on the e71x, but I couldnt get it to work a couple of months ago. Maybe they got it stable by now.

cClock should be added to the list, especially if you like to use you phone as a clock at night. One press of any button brings up the time and date in large, easy to read font. And best of all it's free...

OK, here is another app that I just downloaded and it seems to be working fine on the e71X. It basically uses your phone's GPS to track its location at user-defined intervals. Then you log onto a webpage and it displays the location it on a map.

The cretins that stole my camera gear, wallet and cell phone last year have know idea how lucky they are I didn't have this installed on my last phone...

Oh, and did I mention it's free?

Worldmate is free from ovi store. Default configure gives you weather voice report with visual at 9am and 10pm. Also if you upgrade to GOLD version gives you flight schedules.

iSMS is app for threaded sms. It is unsigned and free. You might have to go through the hassle of getting it signed but ever since I started using it I can not go back to default messaging app.

        1. coreplayer
Best media player. While Divx and smartplayer and default RM player can open some movie / clip files they always had a problem opening wrong foramtted 3gp or mp4. Coreplayer does not. It just eats everything and grinds them and spits it out for perfect view.

        2. Qik

If you like taking a lot of videos and don't want the hassle of uploading it yourself qik is your answer. Its free and once you install all you have to do is point and press stream which is the left soft button and then stop and it will upload it to your qik account automatically. You might wanna be careful if you don't have a data plan

The new (BETA) MINI OPERA 5.0 came out on the 16th, and it's super cool! It's a little slower but it over compensates in so many ways. It lets you open contents in new tabs, it has the classic opera bookmark start page, and the interface is amazing, almost iphone like. Go download it! It says it hasn't been tested on E71x, but i guarantee it works and you'll love it!

Here are some apps that I find useful that I didn't see..

JoikuSpot Light - Creates a Wifi Access point on your phone so you can easily connect your devices to the internet. The free light version doesn't allow you to set a password on the access point, so you may want to monitor the connection once its active.
        http://www.joiku.com/?action=products&mode=productDetails&product_id=310

Wordmobi - Allows you to update your wordpress blog without having to use the webbrowser. The only draw back is you need to install python to get it to work.
        http://code.google.com/p/wordmobi/

Seven Mail - This is pretty much the same as AT&T Xpressmail as Xpressmail is by Seven, but if you sign up for the beta you can get a more feature rich version. This beta lets me sync folders in my google mail and you can pick which folders show up on your phone. The program does send a international text message when you install it.
        http://www.seven.com/

Shazam - Music ID software its pretty popular on the iphone and is free at the moment. It can be downloaded at the ovi store

I second the vote for Shazam, it really does work well.

And if I may: Nokia Energy Profiler is another interesting little app that I've been using to monitor energy use. Typically I use it after I download something new. Start up your new app and then run the profiler and it allows you see the drain placed on the battery over time.

It's free and available from the Nokia forum (www.forum.Nokia.com)

Here's another app (also free) that solves a common problem - forgetting to switch profiles when you go into work, or at night when you go to bed, or on the weekend, or, well you get the idea... It's called Profile Scheduler and does exactly that: schedules profile changes automatically. It's dead simple once you figure out that you set profile times in military format (0-24hrs) even though they are displayed in standard time.

Please note that the application is available in two versions one signed and one unsigned.

And according to Symbian Underground: "The signed versions are bundled with adtronic, an intrusive piece of adware that pollutes your phone with advertisements when you get called or receive an SMS. That's right: adtronic puts ads on your screen even when Theme Scheduler and Profile Scheduler are not running! So better get the unsigned versions of Theme Scheduler and Profile Scheduler."

FWIW, I downloaded the unsigned version and ran it through the signing process at Symbian Signed and it took all of 5 minutes.

        Profile Scheduler: http://www.drjukka.com/ProfScheduler.html

Stephen, thanks for suggesting another cool app! I will try to feature it in an upcoming blog entries. However, I don't know how to manually sign an app so I will have to figure that out first. So far, I try not to list apps that require manual signing to minimize frustrations for the blog readers. Thanks for the compliment. I will keep up the blog as long as people find this info useful.

        Hey Ben,
Before last night I had never signed an app either, and maybe I got lucky, but it was surprisingly easy despite all the information at the top of the Symbian Signed web page.

If you want to try here are the steps:

1 Download the application to your computer and make sure you know the exact folder that it was downloaded to (I typically use the desktop to make life easier). Also remember that sometimes files are downloaded zipped or compressed and you have to open the zip folder (the application file you are looking for will have an extension .sis or .sisx)

2 Go to the Symbian Signed website.
        - In the first box enter the IMEI of your phone. This can be found a number of ways but I use Jbak Taskman (thanks to you). Select menu (top left blue key)>6 tools>0 system info. The IMEI number will be at the top of the list displayed.
        - In the second box enter a valid email address that you have access to.

        vHome desktop.

It gives you a default screen which you can customize. I have tried handy shell and what not but 2.75 version(or higher) of vhome seems to be best for me. I can put 12 shortcut icons 6 rows of stuff on the idle screen. Not to mention bigger clock and you can still turn it back to default idle screen by pressing end call button 2times. Pressing the end call button results in switching through open apps which u can edit(button). If you are frustrated with the limited options of idle homescreen of e71x give it a try.(Handy shell is not as flexible in terms of customizing plus, I think this one uses less resources)

PS: Did i tell you it shows facebook/twitter, weather and news feed on the idle screen as well?

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that KINOMA PLAY S60 has finally been released. Another good news is that it works with the E71X. What sucks is that we have to pay $29.99 for it! >:-l WM devices have a free version; it doesn't have all the "works", but it has plenty of what I need. There is a supposedly "FREE TRIAL" but in order to get it, you have to purchase 1 of 4 programs, which any of them cost more KINOMA itself.

On the other hand you get quite a lot for $29.99
cuz KINOMA has it all: Twitter, Facebook, Last.FM, YouTube, plays music and pics, live streaming, podcasting, picture and video sharing, and much more!!!

I dont know if Ill buy it, cuz in order to take a full advantage of it and data connection is needed and I only wanted the music player part of it. In WM devices is much better than the standard WMP, but if someone wants to try it, go ahead. It does all COREPLAYER does, and more.

And the list grows: Psiloc World Traveler.

This is an app that bundles several services of (potentially) useful information to a traveler, along with a very clean interface. Once you download and install the program, you'll see a scroll-able list of icons along the left edge of your screen and the information page relating to the selected icon on the right.

The app is signed and free to download, and all the services are free with the exception of one, called “Flights” (more below)

        The free services are:

“Weather – a five day weather forecast and current conditions for around 5000 of the most popular travel locations worldwide.
World Clock – four analog or digital clocks which show local time at four cities of your choice simultaneously.
Currencies – automatic currency converter which uses local exchange rates. The currencies plug-in supports daily closing values of 184 exchange rates.
World Map – a moving 3D globe which shows day and night zones, with My City and any city selected by the user."

There is also one service that is not free:

“Flights – an airline travel utility to select, track and be alerted to flights (activation required).”

But the good news is that it doesn't need to be activated if you don't want to use it.

The site also mentions that there will be more services coming.

Here is an app I just downloaded and tested. Best Answering Machine http://nokia-e71-software.smartphoneware.com/ansmachine.php I had set it up originally to pick up after 30 seconds but that was to long as ATT voice mail picked up. So I set it up to answer in 10 seconds. That works for me because I usually have my phone right next to me anyway and if I don't answer immediately I am not going to. Some may want to play with the seconds more to see what the best setting is before allowing ATT voicemail to catch the call. But it is great. My husband has visual voicemail on his iPhone and I wanted it on my E71x so I surfed and found this app. Oh and you can set different profiles and record your own message for callers to hear!!! All I can say is just AWESOME!!! (kk1969 from AT&T Forums)

        Y Browser by Dr Jukka
        http://www.drjukka.com/YBrowser.html
This is another file browser app. This app will let you also set folders as system folders. The main benefit of this is if you set your ringtone folder as a system folder you can refresh your music library without getting all your ringtones put in there. Once you are done refreshing the library you will have to set that folder back to a normal folder. As the phone seems to have problems accessing the folder if its set as a system folder.

        Smartlight (free to try/$)

This is a simple app that keeps the backlight on for all screens other than the idle screen. Which, while perhaps not obvious, is great for a number of reasons. So rather than repeat them all here, it might be easier to take a look at this review:

        http://phonereport.info/smartlight-takes-s60-closer-to-perfection-review/

My only further comments are that it works exactly described except with Jbak Taskman, where for some reason it treats it the same as the Idle screen and allows it to time out. And then there is the annoying info screen that pops up when you first boot the phone. Not a huge issue as it only happens during boot up, but clearly not the best start up sequence.

I would provide a link to the site but I'm not quite sure if the developer has one. I eventually searched for Smartlight ver 1.8 and found a bunch of hosts.

        Tracker by Smartphoneware. (trial-ware)
There is a desktop replacement/application launcher called tracker that works great. It allows you to set single button shortcuts unlike cute keys. It also can list your recent activities on the phone, like txt messages and call logs.. I only really use it as a application launcher.
        http://www.smartphoneware.com/tracker-for-s60-3rd-edition-product.php

        MagicKey by leftup (free)
This allows you to remap your keys. so you can make your keys do different things instead of the default action. These keys can be triggered when specific apps are open, or just as a default set. I originally found this app at the OPDA forum. But here is a my-symbian.com link
        http://my-symbian.com/s60v3/download/search.php?name=MagicKey

I use both of these programs to change the calendar, contact, and mail keys. I also created dedicated camera keys using the volume and voice command keys. I have detailed instructions on how to do this on my site http://www.s2-illusions.com/e71x-tips-tricks/

Hi. I am new to the site but I find it very useful. So first, thanks!

Second, I had the AT&T Social Net app and liked it at first (although I had to try remove and install it once because it froze), as it held both Facebook and Twitter functions. But it stopped working properly after a couple of days. Not worth the trouble.

While looking for a free twitter app I found Tweets60 on your site and tried it and it works great on my E71x. I just wanted to let you know that it is a good free alternative for those who do not want to pay for Gravity.

        Key Lock Clock by DrJukka
This app is similar to cClock as it shows a large time while the phone is locked. You can also have the display on while the phone is charging as well(you can set the intensity of the light) You do not have to set this one as a screen saver like you need to with the cClock. This one is still in development but seems to be working pretty good. I have been running into problems with cClock locking up and rendering my alarm/reminders useless I am hoping this one will give me better results(I am using handy alarm for my alarm/reminders) This one also takes a few random key presses to get the clock to come up sometimes.

Vishal, most apps will access the internet and if you do not have a data plan and aren't careful about selecting a free wifi connection you could end up with a very big bill.

Unfortunately, I think I have to recommend getting a data plan.

@Paula, glad we can help. As for accessories, they are a personal thing and depends on what needs you have. Personally, to protect my phone, I applied a protective skin from Best Skins Ever. Others, however, may not like sticking something on their phones and prefer a shell case or something. I also need to recharge my phone at three different places so I bought extra chargers and leave one at each place.

        Voyager Home Screen (free)
This is a home screen app that can run side by side with the default home screen or by its self. The home screen looks similar to the normal home screen with a few differences 2 rows or shortcuts, current weather(which opens a 4 day), RSS feeds. It also has a smart search(searches for contacts or apps as you dial) and a start menu if 2 rows of shortcuts are not enough.

        http://groups.google.com/group/voyager_mobile
goto files then download the latest version(usually at the bottom of the list)

This app is unsigned so it needs to be signed before you install it or have HelloOX2 installed on your phone.

        @Kristie (Re: Best Answering Machine)
I put the trial version on my phone and absolutely loved the features, especially the custom contact greetings and profile settings.

HOWEVER, I soon discovered that this application is not suitable for my purposes, because it does not work the way I thought it does. The incoming call is not "caught" and internally processed the way that a voicemail might be. Rather, the call is actually answered, put on speakerphone, at which point your pre recorded greeting is played. The phone picks up its own audio output which is how the caller hears your greeting.

SO: as the caller is leaving their message, the phone is also recording any sound that might be occuring near the phone (i.e. you talking to your coworker about the person who is calling!). Now, I haven't had a chance to verify whether or not the app is sending the audio back to the caller or not. But, when I listened to a couple of messages that were left using the app, I could simultaneously hear myself talking to my coworker (like I said, about the person who was calling - and why I wasn't answering LOL!)over the message they left.

Not so cool after all - especially if they heard anything I said :o

I tried to find a setting that allows the phone to process the greeting and recording internally, like a voicemail, but alas, to no avail, and this is why they call it an answering machine.

      48. IasonJan 11, 2010 04:54 PM
I just checked, and YES, the app sends any sounds it picks up in the room to the person leaving the message. Oh well.

        Pixlepipe - http://pixelpipe.com/

Also, Photbucket and flickr will allow you to email images directly to your account, but not automatically of course.

You said it installed on ur phone? which method did you use? and to answer your question, you download a torrent tracker to the phone and then use the symtorrent to activate and download the torrents file[s]. Tim, I appologize, but I think the link I provided above doesn't offer the latest version (which I believe is 1.41). Try downloading it from here: http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/SymTorrent-Download-72539.html It's the first link, the one for 3rd/5th edition phones. That file should have a .sis extension, indicating it is an unsigned app. Remember, .sis = unsigned, .sisx = signed

Now a word on signing apps, Ben's method of hacking the phone should definitely work, but it does cost money.
Using the OPDA site should also work, it just requires a bit of a wait for the initial approval.
The Symbian Singed option, will most likely not work. From what I understand, the developer needs to submit the file to the Symbian Site for "approval" and if that didn't happen then it won't get signed.

BTW, the version I downloaded and installed was 1.41 and I signed it using the OPDA site.

Good luck and let us know if you have any issues, hopefully we can help you sort them out.

@Tim, that's why I rather pay a small fee (couple bucks) and do it the easy way. The amount of time I saved already pay for itself.

@Tim, the error you are getting doesn't seem to suggest it is a signed/unsigned error. It just said unknown error so I am guessing it could be anything. What app are you trying to install again?

Attempting to install Skyfire. When I first tried, I was told I need to install Ovistore. When I download Ovistore, phone will not allow me to install it. Also I do not see a way to manually download it on my PC then install onto phone. Do any of you know of another way to download Skyfyre?

@lynn62, I tried installing Skyfire again. Like, you, it now takes me to the Ovistore (kind of a pain in my opinion). It then made me download the new Ovistore app, and after the Ovistore app is installed and running, I was able to search for the Skyfire app. After that, I was able to download and install the Skyfire will no problem. What steps did u take and what error did you get?

@kalyanapu, For video chat, you can use Skype. You can install it for free on www.skype.com.

I installed cClock on my Nokia E71x, and I love it! One I figured out how to use it, it's great. Now I don't need my reading glasses to check the time. I also really like Google Maps. I still have never been able to install the Ovi Store, though.

Since the E71x doesn't come with a QR code reader you can get an application called BeeTagg.

BeeTagg can read QR codes, Damatrix codes, and BeeTagg codes.

You can get it ny going to http://get.beetagg.com/ on the E71x's MEdia Net.

Thanks for your comprehensive list of power apps for the Nokia e71x. Have you run across any of the following?

        1. Video chat
        2. Fax software

        Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you guys know this, but I just found that AT&T have an email app called "Mobile Email." I think it is a replacement/alternative for their "Xpress mail." It has yahoo, gmail, windows live, aol... and I think you can add other providers... free for att customers to download and use. I tried using it with just WLAN and it didn't seem to connect. So, I'm guessing this is just for att customers... Just an FYI

        Hello Ben!

I finally created a google account to directly post on your blog (which is really neat) and suggest a few other apps to E71x users...

The following apps are *good* *free* apps available in the *ovi store* that are working fine on the E71x:

Snaptu (really neat iPhone-looking Java app to do pretty much everything including very nice weather forecast)

        Energy Radio (online radio)

Sports Tracker (official version for the E71x - very nice app to track workouts such as walking, running and biking using the integrated GPS and an optional heart monitor. Actually one of the best apps I've seen on the E71x)

HP iPrint Photo (to view pics and print them to a compatible HP printer. The viewer is decent even if you don't have a compatible HP printer)

FRANCE 24 LIVE (really nice global news video streaming)

Netflix for Nokia E71x (nice but no streaming. OK to manage queues without a computer. Well it's exclusive to the E71x so we need to show support for it even if the iPhone's version is better as it can now stream)

Opera Mobile 10 (not the beta that crashed all the time. It's now quite stable)

Yahoo! (pretty much just a fancy bookmark but very convenient, especially to check movie times)

Dilbert (great if you like Dilbert comics. Fast and very good image quality)

        Keep up the good work!

The Grooveshark mobile app works on the E71X. Check it out at m.grooveshark.com They offer a free trial, 50 listens over a 2 week period. You can subscribe for $3 per month or $30 for a year. I like the app quite a bit.

I finally got the Ovi Store to install on my E71x-- my guess is that Nokia sent out a device update. I installed Skyfire, since I've seen so many great posts about it, and I have a question: How do you increase the font size? As it stands now, I practically need a magnifying glass to read anything on the browser. Thanks in advance!

@bigbeartaxlady, glad to hear you finally got the Ovi Store to work. As for Skyfire, there is no way to increase the font size like a regular browser. Instead, you "zoom" in on a particular section of the web page. They called it "contextual zoom". You should see a rectangle with four corners when you are using the browser. Clicking twice will zoom the page into that area. Clicking twice again will zoom back out.

Mobile E-mail is replacing Xpress Mail, and, while I like it, I noticed that it doesn't let me download files, always indicating that the file is too big. I had no trouble downloading on Xpress mail. Any ideas?

I downloaded "Expense Recorder" from the Ovi Store on my E71x, and it seems to do the job. The app is free.
